A recent Home Office report advises that some of the data in Britain’s forensic DNA database – one of the largest in the world, with 4 million people on it – should be destroyed. Playing devils advocate, DinkyKitty suggests that keeping that data could ultimately result in improved healthcare and a boost to the British pharmaceutical industry.

Using SIMP to encrypt instant messaging

Instant messaging is popular, but incredibly insecure. Normally, messages are sent in clear-text, readable to anyone on your network with a packet sniffer. They are also routinely read by the IM servers, and it probably won’t be long before ISPs sign up with advertising companies to profile their users. Luckily, it’s very easy to encrypt your messages.

The major laptop manufacturers all seem to be missing out on a key market segment for portable computers: people who actually travel with their laptops. I’m not referring to the executive who takes their laptop to a business meeting for a presentation, I’m talking about the “generation X’ers” and gap-year travellers who are doing serious miles in inhospitable surroundings, but who still want to be able to edit their digital pictures, email their friends and family, update the music on their iPod and play the occasional game.
